U.S., Illinois PIRG grades Congress on public interest issues
This summer, the U.S. PIRG and state PIRGs began distributing individualized scorecards to more households across the country as part of a door-to-door campaign to shine the spotlight on the nation’s key environmental and health laws.
In addition to tracking such diverse public interest votes as protecting the Arctic Refuge from drilling, passing a strong patients’ bill of rights, and lowering the costs of student loans, the scorecards also list information about campaign contributions, biographical data, past PIRG scores, and telephone numbers for citizens to contact their elected officials.
The state Public Interest Research Groups are an alliance of state-based, citizen-funded organizations that advocate the protection of the environment, encourage a fair marketplace for consumers and foster responsive, democratic government. Each state group examines threats to public health and well being and fights to end them, using investigative research, media exposes, grassroots organizing, advocacy and litigation.
